Enjoy 3 weeks in boutique accommodation through Cornwall, Ireland, Belfast and London with your host, Karen Kidd.
UK & Ireland – Castles and Coast.
Views of spellbinding scenery. Stories of maritime towns and picture-book villages. Ancient castles steeped in history and country inns full of character. The more you explore this landscape, the deeper you’ll fall under its spell.
In the UK, Cornwall is dressed to impress with its wild moors and coastlines in perfect contrast to its historic cities and postcard fishing villages. The locals love of the land coupled with their relationship with the sea underpins their rich culinary heritage.
Explore Wells’ Gothic cathedral, romantic Somerset and the rolling fields of heather in Dartmoor National Park before heading to the coast.
Enjoy a stroll around Port Isaac, made famous by the tv series, Doc Martin, before a leisurely lunch at Rick Stein’s ‘The Seafood Restaurant’ in Padstow.
Venture off the coast of Penzance to the tidal island of St Michael’s Mount, a busy little village overflowing with treasure from its medieval past. Continue down the coast to St Ives, which has enviably earned the title “best little seaside town” and Falmouth known for its deep natural harbour and Pendennis castle built by Henry VIII, to the Fowey estuary on the south Cornish coast. And head up to Devon, and on to the green hills and golden sandstone cliffs of Dorset, before continuing to Lyme Regis to walk in the footsteps of Jane Austen’s heroines and Salisbury’s Old Roman road.
On to Dublin, Ireland, home of Guinness and literary giants such as Yeats and Joyce. Dublin is a small cobblestoned city with a big history, stories to enthral you and a fun and vibrant mood that will linger with you.
Take a side trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital and the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, which famously struck an iceberg and sunk in 1912.
Belfast is the economic engine of Northern Ireland and remains the business hub and centre for the arts. Explore the Titanic Quarter and soak up the history that is everywhere.
Feel the atmosphere of Cardiff Arms Park, one of the most famous grounds in Welsh rugby, right in the heart of Cardiff city centre almost rubbing shoulders with Cardiff Castle itself.
And venture away from the cities, to the stunning countryside of County Kildare where you’ll discover the secrets of the trade at the Irish National Stud where racing is in the blood.
Marvel at the castles as you meander through County Galway. Walk through Ennis with its narrow, colourful streets and hear myths and mysteries unravelled along the way before arriving completely unprepared for the amazing Cliffs of Moher, part of the great Atlantic Way which encircles Ireland. Weather beaten and exposed, this striking landscape, dotted with castles will inspire the romantic in anyone.
The Ring of Kerry peeks over the edge of the world, an emerald green land with welcoming villages, and ancient forts and ruins. And lovely Kinsale with its sea and sand views, cosy pubs, brightly coloured houses and cobbled streets that curve around a pretty bay.
Wend your way through Kilkenny’s heather-clad hills and the fairytale glens of the Wicklow Mountains to arrive at iconic Ballykissangel.
